From April 2027, pensions will be brought within the scope of inheritance tax, creating significant implications for many clients with substantial pension wealth. What has traditionally been an effective planning tool may now give rise to unexpected tax exposure on death.

For solicitors, this change presents both a risk and an opportunity — from advising clients in advance to dealing with more complex estates in practice. This session will provide a clear and practical overview of the changes and how best to prepare.

What you will learn:

  • How the April 2027 changes will impact pension and IHT planning
  • Pension withdrawal options and their implications
  • Alternative inheritance tax planning strategies
  • The benefits and risks of clients spreading their wealth
  • Liability for reporting and paying IHT on pension assets
  • Practical issues in estate administration
  • Information sharing between executors and pension providers
  • Key GDPR considerations
