This 3 hour session is aimed as those looking to develop their commercial skills with a view to progression within their firm. It is ideally suited to everyone from recently qualified to new partner level as well as a useful refresher for more senior practitioners. The session will cover three distinct areas with opportunities to consider specific delegate queries. The seminar will include:

No nonsense numbers: an overview of the figures that make a legal business tick.

  • Solicitors are great with words but seldom as adept with figures. In this opening session we will look at the numbers that make a law firm work dealing with everything from fees and profits to client conversion rates and retention
  • Business development in a nutshell: How to identify, connect with and engage new clients.

  • Where do clients come from, why do they chose us and what else can we do for them? These are just 3 of the questions that we will consider in this session. Business development (BD) is at the core of every firm and everyone within your practice has a role to play. In this section we will look at the many ways you can make BD effective for both existing and new clients.
  • Smooth operators: A look at some common practice issues and how to resolve them

  • Here we will examine some common issues that legal businesses experience and some potential solutions to challenges ranging from attracting and retaining staff to IT and regulation. Business can be tough at times but there are always ways to make it just a little easier.
  • The event begins at 2pm. Delegate registration is open from 1:30pm.

Stephen has over 30 years' experience of legal practice. A partner previously in several law firms, he successfully sold his own practice in 2008. Stephen currently works within the HM Connect team at Harper Macleod where he is involved in supporting many of Scotland's High Street legal firms.

Stephen has also taught on the Diploma in Legal Practice at both Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities as well as having been a producer and presenter of PEAT 2 seminars. He is the author of several Journal articles, as well as a convener and speaker at Law Society seminars.

He has also been involved in several other projects including on line automation of legal processes, internet and social media marketing and a new business start-up.
